Meet Matt Diamond

Matt Diamond – ScaleCo Partner, Legal and Michigan Lead

Based in Birmingham, Michigan (outside of Detroit), but an Akron, Ohio native, Matt Diamond joined ScaleCo in 2021 as a Partner, Legal & Michigan Lead. He is responsible for deal sourcing, fundraising, and network building in Michigan as well as ScaleCo’s diligence and legal processes. Mr. Diamond and his father, Jack T. Diamond, CEO of Brennan, Manna, and Diamond, were introduced to Brendan Anderson, Founder and Managing Partner of ScaleCo, through mutual networks while searching for investment opportunities in 2020. Both Jack and Matt Diamond had an interest in growing and investing in Midwest-based entrepreneurial companies, and felt that their outlooks closely aligned with Mr. Anderson’s, which ultimately led them to find a way to work together.

Mr. Diamond received a BS in Business and Finance from Miami University and a JD from the University of Illinois. Matt Diamond began his career as a legal associate at Gaido & Fintzen, a Chicago-based law firm, advising entrepreneurs on entity formation, investment structuring, capital raising, and mergers & acquisitions. Although he enjoyed practicing law and the wide range of business experiences that came with it, Mr. Diamond had always envisioned transitioning to a more entrepreneurial role.

Entrepreneurial Mindset

Mr. Diamond’s path to the private equity industry has followed a nontraditional route. In addition to advising businesses as an attorney, he has started, lead, and invested in various businesses, prior to joining ScaleCo. Mr. Diamond has had a natural passion for entrepreneurship since childhood. At a young age, Mr. Diamond sold painted rocks and seashells to fellow travelers while on vacation, designed and sold t-shirts in college, and ran a bowtie ecommerce brand in law school, amongst other endeavors.

Following his experience as a law firm attorney, he co-founded Apollo Medical Solutions, a value-based care program implementer for healthcare facilities, and started Redbrick Capital, an investment firm. “I’ve always been very curious about business; learning, and reading about what real people were doing in the real world. I definitely knew I wanted to be on the entrepreneurial side of business”.

Through his varied experiences, Matt has uncovered his why: “You get where you want to go by helping other people get where they want to go. An aspiration of mine is to help entrepreneurial people realize their dreams.” As ScaleCo combines motivated operators with exceptional opportunities to execute a growth plan for its portfolio investments, Mr. Diamond is a true advocate of ScaleCo’s vision.

The Power of Mentorship

Over Mr. Diamond’s professional career, he has had several mentors who have taught him valuable lessons. He credits his father as well as Tony Manna, Chairman of Brennan, Manna, & Diamond and Signet, LLC, as having the most impact on his professional career. “I was really lucky to be exposed to people that were doing non-traditional things, and taking a non-traditional route. I learned from people who were entrepreneurial, growing and starting things themselves before I knew that was a possibility”. Having experienced different types of mentorship relationships, Mr. Diamond appreciates a collaborative approach that combines personal connection and honest feedback. He believes this form of mentorship is extremely valuable, and plans to employ these tools in his leadership at ScaleCo.

Mr. Diamond brings a high degree of emotional intelligence, clear communication, and hunger for learning to his role at ScaleCo.  Mr. Diamond believes his children have changed his outlook on life: “It has made me focus much more on what’s important, and realize that life is not infinite…You want to make sure you’re spending time on the right things.”

Out of the office, Mr. Diamond resides in Michigan with his wife, three children, Virginia (4), Penelope (2), and Tiffin (4 months), and goldendoodle, Gally. Fun fact: while attending Walsh Jesuit High School, Mr. Diamond competed against basketball star, Lebron James.
